Nestled in the remote fishing village of Thihaliya, on the banks of the Kalpitiya lagoon, our resort sits on a 9 acre coconut plantation amidst natural surroundings. Located 16km south of the coastal town of Kalpitiya at the tip of the peninsula, we are just 2 hours away from Bandaranaike International Airport. Although tucked away in tranquil isolation, at Ruwala you will also have access to many of Sri Lanka’s best attractions – natural, cultural and historical. Wilpattu National Park – Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest wildlife sanctuary, is just a short drive or boat ride away; the attractions of the Cultural Triangle are easily accessible and so are the historic cities of Kandy and Yapahuwa.
Our Activities:

We have a host of outdoor fun for all who seek the thrills and spills of adventure. Our location on the Kalpitiya peninsula is perfectly placed between the lagoon and the Indian Ocean – the beach being less than 5km away. Being so strategically situated we have the advantage of having no ‘off season’. Regular sea based activities are offered during the season, and at off season, they are continued on the lagoon as it is safe throughout the year.
Our Surroundings:
================
The expansive acreage of our resort is divided by a sand bank into two sections: the chalets, the cottages, and the main dining area at one end, and the camp-site and outdoor/adventure activities at the other. Perfect for bird watchers and nature lovers in general, the immediate environment consists of two distinct eco-systems. The lagoon – which is a fertile breeding ground for crabs, prawns and a variety of fish, and the lush mangrove forest where several endemic species thrive. It also provides safe nesting for a wide variety of birds including several species of waders. The gardens are scattered with coconut and Palmyra palms as well as a host of indigenous dry-zone trees that attract a large variety of birds and butterflies.
Take a nature-trail through the dense Mangroves and discover the little summerhouse tucked away amidst them – the perfect hideout for a quiet rest. Climb up to the tree-house on top of a Palmyra palm and enjoy breath-taking views of the Kalpitiya lagoon and gaze into the distance beyond.
Our Pledge: Committed to being Green
====================================
From the outset we were deeply committed to preserve the natural habitat of the location and support the local communities. Working towards an eco-friendly, ‘Green Hotel’, Ruwala Resort was designed to cause minimal damage to the environment. Not one tree was cut during the initial construction, and many were planted and large trees added through root-ball method. Construction was carried out by workers from the local community in the surrounding villages of Kalpitiya, providing them with employment; even the wooden light fixtures are handmade by carpenters from the locality.
The Staff (with the exception of the senior management) is also from the nearby area and was trained in-situ. Other on-going projects include providing fishermen with free passage to the Kalpitiya lagoon, providing drinking water wells to the villagers and creating a suitable environment to encourage local arts and crafts.
Green practices are implemented in day to day hotel operations as much as possible such as separation and recycling of non-biodegradable waste. All kitchen waste is used for composting and as animal feed. Organic compost is used for the cultivation of organic fruits and vegetables. Replanting mangroves in the banks of the lagoon and re-forestation is carried out to maintain a balance in the ecosystem. Solar Power is utilised wherever possible as well as rain water harvesting. Projects for the future include switching to ´Green Energy´ methods for the hotel operations.
